Although she said she was not expecting the win, junior SJ Matthews is the new George Washington University Student Association president-elect.
Ms. Matthews, who majors in classical studies in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, said she was a little stressed about the runoff when it was announced after the elections last week. She thought that being a candidate coming from outside the SA would have put her at a disadvantage.
Ms. Matthews won the runoff election with 66.6 percent of the vote.
Among three other candidates for president in the regular 2019-20 George Washington University Student Body election, she earned just over 25 percent of the vote. No candidate earned the 40 percent required by the SA constitution, which led to the runoff election on Thursday.
“I’m really excited to be an advocate for the students next semester as the next Student Association president,” Ms. Matthews said. “I really think we’re going to get a lot done.”
With her goal of building a “GW for all,” Ms. Matthews said the biggest thing she wants to accomplish over the next year is building more community across campus.
“I’m hoping to start that with working to get tap access to all residence halls for all students, so we can start using spaces we already have,” Ms. Matthews said, “and then working with the administration to build new spaces across campus.”
