Students at George Washington University can help those struggling with food insecurity on campus by participating in the 2023 Swipe Out Hunger Campaign.

The donations will go to The Store, a student-run food pantry located in District House room B121 that helps bridge gaps in food security for the GW community, and the Abrahms Family Fund, an emergency relief fund that provides GWorld Dollars or Dining Dollars to students experiencing food insecurity.

GW’s Swipe Out Hunger campaign runs from May 12 to May 31. All donations will be split equally between The Store and the Abrahms Family Fund.

In 2022, more than $7,200 was raised to help GW students in need of assistance. The goal for the 2023 campaign is to raise $10,000 to help fight food insecurity.

Andrew Sonn, the assistant dean of Students for Student Support and staff advisor for The Store, said donations are especially important this year because of the rising price of groceries.

"Every dollar from Swipe Out Hunger will be used by The Store, GW's food pantry, to purchase food for GW student shoppers. This year, we've had over 600 registered student shoppers and there is high demand for food, given the increasing grocery prices,” Sonn said.

Students, faculty and staff can donate to the Swipe Out Hunger Campaign by using Dining Dollars or Colonial Cash. To donate, you must have an active GWorld card balance of either Dining Dollars or Colonial Cash.

Donations can only be made through the GET Mobile app on Apple or Android.

This year, GW students can also donate one or more of their remaining swipes on their 120, 150 or 175 block meal plans. If you have remaining meals as part of your Block 120, 150 or 175 spring 2023 Meal Plan, fill out this webform to donate.  The last day of the spring meal program is May 17.

Currently, students on the unlimited dining meal plan are not able to donate unused meal swipes.

Donating GWorld funds through the Swipe Out Hunger campaign is voluntary and donations are not considered tax deductible.
