​Thom Shanker was named a “Volunteer of the Year” for 2022 by the McLean Volunteer Fire Department in Northern Virginia.

The McLean Volunteer Fire Department, according to its website, includes dozens of women and men from diverse communities across Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C., who are committed to serving the residents of McLean and Fairfax County.

The volunteers, like GW’s Shanker, come from all walks of life and work or study in a wide variety of careers. Volunteers put in more than 10,000 hours annually.
