George Washington University Associate Dean of Students Tim Miller will return to his alma mater James Madison University as vice president for student affairs, JMU announced on Wednesday. He will begin the role on June 1.
“I am both humbled and excited about the opportunity to return to my alma mater, James Madison University, to serve as the vice president for student affairs. This is a dream opportunity for me that would not have come true if not for everything I have learned during my time at GW,” Dr. Miller said. “I can not thank my colleagues at GW enough for everything you have taught me, and I will always consider myself a part of this community and will never forget how I was welcomed into GW so many years ago.”
Dr. Miller has been a key member of the student affairs team since 2002, when he joined GW as the assistant director of the Student Activities Center, overseeing the Office of Community Service and helping to launch initiatives including Alternative Breaks and Jumpstart. He became the executive director of the Student Activities Center, where he managed many aspects of the student experience including Colonial Inauguration, student organizations, community service, leadership and experiential learning, and GW spirit programs. While in this role, he mentored and guided students in creating GW TRAiLS, the LGBTQ Resource Center and the university's float in President Obama's first inaugural parade.
He was named associate dean of students in 2011 and has overseen the Center for Student Engagement since that time. In this role, he has managed the areas previously part of the Student Activities Center as well as GW housing, the Mount Vernon Campus and residential engagement. Most recently, he worked collaboratively with students to create the Store, GW's food pantry.
Dr. Miller is also an adjunct faculty member in the Organizational Leadership and Learning program of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development and the Human Services and Social Justice program in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
He is a double alumnus of James Madison University, earning his bachelor’s degree in political science and criminal justice and his master’s degree in college student personnel administration from JMU. He also holds a doctorate in executive leadership from the Human and Organizational Learning program at GW.
“I want to thank Tim for his work over 16 years to enhance the student experience at GW. He will be greatly missed by me and our students. We wish him well as he returns to his beloved JMU and takes on this exciting new opportunity,” said GW Provost Forrest Maltzman.
