With redevelopment slated for the site of Rice Hall, planning is underway to relocate administrative units currently in the building by the end of 2018.
The Office of the President and Office of the Provost will move to 1918 F St. NW, which currently serves as Alumni House and office space for the Office of Alumni Relations. The building will undergo renovations to accommodate these offices, and alternate locations will be identified on the Foggy Bottom Campus to welcome returning alumni and house Alumni Relations staff.
Old Main, adjacent to 1918 F St., will become the central administrative building housing the university’s vice presidents and their immediate staffs. The Office of the Provost has been working with academic units currently located in Old Main to identify alternate locations. Some occupants of Old Main already have started to move out of the building to allow for reconstruction, which will begin in earnest in early 2018 and continue into the fall semester.
The interior of Old Main will be renovated and transformed into an effective office space for administration, with open floor plans and shared resources like meeting rooms, collaboration spaces, copiers and pantries to maximize space and create greater efficiency. Architects have met with leaders of affected units to understand the work of the units, assess space requirements and provide estimated space allocations for Old Main. They will have follow up meetings this fall regarding specific needs for units.
As plans are finalized, leaders of affected units will be communicating with their staffs about individual relocation plans, which may include workspace on the Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon or Virginia Science and Technology campuses.

The Faculty and Staff Service Center, currently located on the ground floor of Rice Hall, will be relocated to a site to be determined on the Foggy Bottom Campus.
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions, currently located on the second floor of Rice Hall, will move to the Marvin Center second floor, streamlining the admissions visit experience for prospective students and their families. The Admissions Visitors Center on the first floor of the Marvin Center is the primary welcoming point for prospective students and their families, and visit day programming is held primarily in the Marvin Center. The Program of Theatre and Dance will move to Building XX, at 814 20th St. NW.
No student space in the Marvin Center or other Foggy Bottom Campus buildings will be used to house administrative functions.
The university is also evaluating long-term space needs associated with administrative units located in leased space near the Foggy Bottom Campus. This planning is also underway to ensure that space is appropriately managed to allow for the migration of administrative units in leased space back to campus locations.
Boston Properties has been selected to lead the redevelopment of the Rice Hall site into a mixed-use property including office and retail space. The project will be similar in nature to the redevelopment of Square 54, now known as The Avenue and will provide further non-tuition driven revenue for the university to support the academic enterprise.
Boston Properties hopes to obtain the permits to begin construction of the new building by the end of 2019 and deliver a completed project in early 2022.
