The Milken Institute School of Public Health has been recognized for achieving a high level of sustainability and excellent architectural function. The building recently received a top 10 award from the The American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (COTE).

The awards were given out based on design intent and sustainability factors like ecology, water use, energy use, occupant health and resilience. The SPH building was recognized alongside other healthcare facilities, education buildings,a district energy plant and a municipal salt shed.

The LEED Platinum SPH building opened in May 2014 and houses the school's six academic departments. It was designed to maximize natural light and fresh air with a central open atrium. It was the only building in Washington, D.C., to receive this national recognition.
