To honor its veteran and military community members and to commemorate Veterans Day on Nov. 11, the George Washington University’s Office of Military and Veteran Student Services has lined up a series of events, activities and networking opportunities from Nov. 5 to Nov. 18.

Major events will kick off on Friday with the “Through Their Eyes” showcase in which high school art students in the D.C. area interpreted veterans’ anonymous stories. The exhibition will begin at 6 p.m. on the third floor of the Marvin Center.

The central event of Veterans Week at GW is the wreath-laying ceremony in honor of those who served. It takes place 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Kogan Plaza’s Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony will be officiated by Provost Steve Lerman and Vice Admiral (retired) Mel Williams Jr., associate provost for military and veteran affairs. Afterward, the GW Veterans Accelerate Learning Opportunities and Rewards program (GW VALOR) will host a holiday care package drive from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third floor of the Marvin Center, where participants will write notes and assemble gift packages for service members on the USS George Washington.

On Thursday, Nov. 13, GW student veterans of the Israeli Defense Force will discuss the legal complications of combat—a subject with which they have firsthand experience—in a panel on the “Law of War” in Marvin Center 413-414.

The Ribbon Project, an immersion-style training program to help faculty and staff understand the experiences of their veteran and military students, will also return this year. The project will be from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 at the National Veterans Center. Faculty, staff and visitors who would like to participate in the program can register.
