Members of the George Washington University community will convene on the Foggy Bottom Campus this weekend for GW Homecoming 2014.

Events include a Friday evening bonfire in celebration of George Washington’s upcoming 282nd birthday, a Saturday afternoon tailgate and the GW men’s basketball game against Atlantic 10 rival Fordham. The university also will celebrate the induction of seven alumni into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame.

“The achievements and the legacy left by these seven former GW student-athletes inspire our current generation of 450 student-athletes,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero. “This group is a part of our proud history, and we are honored to have them in our Athletic Hall of Fame.”

Friday’s bonfire will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on University Yard and will feature performances by Colonial Brass, the Fifes and Drums of Prince William the Third, and the GW Vibes; a special ceremony featuring Colonial Lodge Number 1821; and remarks from GW President Steven Knapp and GW Alumni Association President Steve Frenkil, B.A. ’74. Columbian College of Arts and Sciences student and Colonial Ambassador Erica Halvorson will serve as emcee. Mr. and Ms. GW nominees will be introduced at the bonfire. Voting for the contest closes Friday at 9 p.m. and the winners will be announced during Saturday’s basketball game.

Mr. and Ms. GW Nominees will be introducing themselves at the bonfire and pushing for final votes. Voting closes on Feb. 7 at 9 p.m. and the winners will be announced at the homecoming game.

The men’s and women’s squash teams and GW gymnastics also are in action over the weekend. The squash teams play Virginia and Bucknell on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. Gymnastics competes Sunday at 1 p.m.

Tipoff for Saturday’s GW/Fordham basketball game is set for 4 p.m. The 2014 Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at halftime.
