University Monitoring Potential for Government Shutdown

The university will continue to operate normally and provide continued updates and resources to the GW community.

The George Washington University is monitoring discussions regarding the passage of a new spending bill, including the possibility that lawmakers may not reach an agreement before midnight tonight, resulting in a federal government shutdown.

In the event of a shutdown, the university will continue to operate normally and will provide continued updates and resources to the GW community.  District of Columbia services will be unaffected.

A shutdown will not affect students’ financial aid awards. However, during a shutdown, student veterans may experience a delay in receiving GI Bill education benefits. The Office of Military and Veteran Student Services is in contact with student veterans to offer support and will provide emergency funding if benefits are delayed. Additionally, students who hold an off-campus Federal Work Study position will not be allowed to work during a shutdown. The Student Employment Office has contacted affected students, who should follow instructions from their job supervisors.

Other impacts to the university community will vary depending on the length of a shutdown, and the university will monitor and continue to provide updates and assistance to GW community members.
