In the leadup to its May 17 Commencement ceremony on the National Mall, the George Washington University has announced a cap-decorating contest, challenging students to get creative with their attire for a chance to win prizes and appear in a ceremony highlight video.

GW is asking graduates to brainstorm interesting, artistic ways to spotlight their time at the university, inspire fellow Commencement participants or send a message to friends and family from their seats on the National Mall. Participants can tweet an image of their cap using #GWCommencement, and GW's Marketing and Creative Services staff will vote on its three favorite commencement caps. The winners will receive campus store gift certificates in the amounts $100 for the first-place winner, $50 for second and $25 for third.

The GW video team also will be patrolling the grounds before the ceremony, broadcasting its location on Twitter (@GW_VideoCrew) and documenting graduates' originality to be preserved in a short Commencement highlight video.
