Turf Replaced on Mount Vernon Athletic Field

August 2, 2011

GW women’s soccer will begin preseason training this Friday on a new synthetic turf surface on the Mount Vernon Athletic Field, which serves as home base for GW men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse.

GW Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero announced that the university would replace the existing turf in June.

“The soccer/lacrosse field turf replacement was identified as an immediate need during our strategic review of university athletics,” said Mr. Nero. “The installation of this new surface will not only benefit our varsity coaches and student-athletes but the university’s club sports and recreation and intramural programs as well.”

Industry leader FieldTurf was chosen for the installation project, and GW student-athletes will compete on the company’s latest synthetic turf system.

GW women’s soccer will host the first game on the revamped field against Georgetown University, a 2010 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist, in its season opener Aug. 19 at 4 p.m.

The GW men’s soccer team will begin preseason training on Aug. 15 with its first competition on the new surface set for Aug. 21 in an exhibition match against Old Dominion University.

GW’s Department of Athletics and Recreation also is evaluating other playing facilities as part of the continuing strategic review.

“Our goal is to offer state-of-the-art facilities so our teams can be competitive and successful,” said Mr. Nero.
