Tightening Security

Beginning Wednesday, the Marvin Center will have limited access after 10 p.m.

Two laptops were stolen by two suspects last Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. from the first-floor seating area in Columbian Square.

At the time of the crime, a George Washington Police Department security officer and a special police officer were both on patrol in the building but not in the Columbian Square area.

To reduce the potential for this type of crime in the future, GWPD will begin limiting the number of entrances available after hours.

The 21st Street entrance and the H Street basement level entrance will be closed and locked at 10 p.m. The street-level entrance on H Street and Eye Street will remain open. Students will not be required to show their GWorld card at any of the entrances.

“Reducing the number of access entry points makes it easier for GWPD officers to provide a more visible security presence, and it acts as a deterrent to those with criminal intent,” says Darrell Darnell, senior associate vice president for safety and security.

A GWPD security officer will be stationed by the H Street entrance, and a special police officer will continuously patrol the J Street and Columbian Square areas unless there is a call for assistance in another area of the building. A student community service assistant will be stationed near the concierge desk near the Eye Street entrance.

The Marvin Center is open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day.
