The George Washington Student Association presidential election has been postponed until fall 2017, a decision made as a result of consultation by the Division of Student Affairs and the student-appointed Joint Elections Committee (JEC).

Voting on all other races including SA executive vice president and senate and Class Council and Program Board are continuing as scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday.

The university has been supporting and monitoring the process throughout this election cycle, said Alex Simone, chair of the Joint Elections Committee. The decision to postpone was made after careful deliberation and out of an overriding concern for students’ well-being.

“The members of the JEC believe that the postponement of the presidential election until fall 2017 will further ensure a free and fair election process,” she said.

Peter Konwerski, vice provost and dean of student affairs, said he is hopeful about the election and looks forward to seeing students step forward as citizen leaders in the GW community.

“The opportunity to lead student government is another way our students can put their knowledge into action and represent the highest values of the university, including respect and diversity, teamwork, community and overall excellence,” he said.

Results of this week’s election will be announced Thursday after polls close at 9 p.m. More information about the fall election for the SA president will be announced at a later date.
