Starting May 1, the GW Police Department will be led by James Isom. Now executive assistant chief of police, Mr. Isom has served on the university’s police force for more than 35 years. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in the military police. Mr. Isom also earned a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from George Washington.

“I am confident James Isom will do an outstanding job, drawing on his more than three decades of excellent service as a university police officer and his experience serving as second-in-command of the GW Police Department,” says Lou Katz, executive vice president and treasurer.

Mr. Isom will succeed longtime GW Police Chief Dolores Stafford, who is retiring April 30 after 18 years of service. A national search is underway for a candidate to fill the position on a permanent basis.

The university also is conducting a national search for a senior associate vice president for safety and security, a position that will oversee the GW Police Department, the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management, and GW’s environmental health and safety functions.
