STAR Students

Some of the National Football League’s top players, including the New York Giants’ Kevin Boothe and the New Orleans Saints’ Marques Colston, are among the newest students enrolled in the George Washington School of Business’ STAR (Special Talent, Access and Responsibility) EMBA program.

Launched last year, STAR EMBA is a custom executive M.B.A. program that provides intensive training in business analysis for athletes, celebrities and others with personal brands.

The second cohort of STAR EMBA students, which includes a number of NFL players and their spouses, a PGA golfer and two former Olympians— including rower Garrett Klugh and diver Katura Horton-Perinchief—began classes last Friday.

“The challenges—both professionally and financially—faced by athletes, musicians and entertainers are unique,” said GWSB Dean Doug Guthrie. “These talented individuals must map out and implement a precise plan to take their business endeavors to the next level. Our STAR EMBA program provides these students with the indispensible skills and resources necessary for success.”

Focusing on leadership, success strategies and social responsibility, the STAR EMBA program is the first fully accredited M.B.A. curriculum in this field and provides students with customized experiences designed to fit their nontraditional schedules and backgrounds.

Students attend classes in Washington, D.C., New York and Los Angeles over an 18-month period, allowing them access to some of the top business and philanthropy leaders. The program includes onsite and online courses. STAR EMBA students will also be able to create their own personal business plans, guided by professors, mentors and coaches.

“The STAR EMBA program at GW’s School of Business is a great opportunity for me to take the leadership experience I’ve gained during my time in the NFL and translate it into business success off the field,” said the New Orleans Saints’ Mr. Colston, who is a Super Bowl champion. “I want to be more involved in my community and impact it in a positive way. GWSB’s commitment to society and customized education allows me to combine my personal interest in making a difference with a professional skill set to ensure my projects succeed.”
