Vincent Chiappinelli has served as the SMHS interim associate dean for the past two years and has chaired the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology since 1997.

The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences has named Vincent Chiappinelli as the school’s associate dean and associate vice president for health affairs.

Dr. Chiappinelli has served as the SMHS interim associate dean for the past two years and has chaired the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology since 1997.

In his new role, Dr. Chiappinelli will provide administrative support to academic and research programs in SMHS. He is responsible for allocating resources to ensure quality within the school’s programs, so that they maintain accreditation and are responsive to the needs of students, faculty and staff.

“I am very pleased that Dr. Chiappinelli has agreed to serve the school in this important leadership role,” said Jeffrey S. Akman, vice president for health affairs and dean at SMHS. “His commitment to the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences is evident in the consistent quality of his leadership. Dr. Chiappinelli has provided me with superb counsel on a variety of matters for years, and I look forward to continuing to work with him in this capacity.”

Dr. Chiappinelli will oversee new school initiatives by serving as the SMHS dean’s designate in senior leadership interaction with faculty and key administrators and working closely with them to provide excellence in academic management and efficiency in research.

He will also provide support for the development of the new integrated M.D. program curriculum. He will aid in reconfiguring the basic science courses and oversee the management of resources and space allocations required for the new curriculum.

Additionally, he will oversee major ongoing construction projects in Ross Hall, including an NIH-funded C06 laboratory renovation and the creation of a new state-of-the art Clinical Learning and Simulation Skills Center.

Dr. Chiappinelli’s neuroscience research was funded by NIH for over 25 years, and he is currently the co-principal investigator of the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award in which GW partners with the Children’s National Medical Center.  All grants submitted by SMHS, and federal grants submitted by the GW Medical Faculty Associates, will be reviewed and approved by Dr. Chiappinelli. He will also work with Lance Kaplan, associate dean of finance, administration and operations, to establish annual budgets of basic science departments and research institutes.

Lastly, as the SMHS associate dean and associate vice president for health affairs, Dr. Chiappinelli will oversee the institutes and centers within SMHS, including the GW Cancer Institute, the International Medicine Programs, and the GW Institute for Spirituality (GWISH).

“In this role, I will continue to collaborate with many outstanding people within SMHS and across the university to ensure that we maintain high levels of excellence,” said Dr. Chiappinelli. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity to serve on Dean Akman’s senior leadership team, as SMHS continues to grow on an upward trajectory.”
