The George Washington University School of Business will offer a Bachelor of Science in finance degree beginning this fall. This first-of-its-kind program model will require students to double major in finance, in addition to a discipline outside of GWSB.

“This program allows us to teach in-depth knowledge in a given business field, such as finance, while requiring that students also pursue a complementary field in the liberal arts,” said Doug Guthrie, dean of GWSB. “Students will be career ready but they will also have the training of deep critical thinking about other topics outside of business.”

Finance will be the first GWSB major offered under this degree, which is targeted at rising sophomores and incoming freshmen. Other majors, including marketing and international business, will be offered in the future. In addition to the general education requirements, the B.S. in finance degree will require five signature courses, six finance major prerequisite courses and 11 finance major courses, including one with a global focus. This new model will coexist with the Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Accountancy degrees already offered by GWSB.

“Our new Bachelor of Science degree recognizes the value of a liberal arts education in addition to the in-depth knowledge in a business discipline that is expected from employers,” said Isabelle Bajeux-Besnainou, associate dean for undergraduate programs at GWSB. “Students graduating with this degree will have practical reasoning as well as analytical and critical thinking skills that will allow them to address the issues of the modern world and become lifelong learners.”
