Provost Steven Lerman announced earlier today the restructuring of the Division of Student and Academic Support Services to enhance the overall student experience. The new model will focus on the development of three distinct areas under the Office of the Provost: athletics and recreation, student affairs and enrollment management.
“This new structure will align student life and academic pursuits even more closely,” said Dr. Lerman. “This has been an ongoing effort for the past few years, and the new structure is the next step in the process.”
The restructuring comes as Robert Chernak, who was instrumental in helping develop the new model, retires as senior vice provost and senior vice president of student and academic support services.
“I’m optimistic that the new organizational design for SASS will allow for the seamless continuity of the vital programs and services so important to the quality of life for our students,” said Dr. Chernak. “I worked closely with Dr. Lerman and others on this plan, which is a logical next step in GW's efforts to offer students the best possible experience both inside and outside the classroom.”
The new model includes expanded roles and responsibilities and new reporting structures for some senior leaders. Peter Konwerski will assume the newly created role of senior associate provost and dean of student affairs. Dr. Konwerski will oversee the departments that provide for students’ health and wellness, promote student engagement and manage administrative services, such as orientation and housing. He is also charged with enhancing the university’s career services model, a priority supported by President Steven Knapp. Dr. Konwerski will report directly to Dr. Lerman.
Terri Harris Reed, vice provost for diversity and inclusion, will now oversee additional centers and areas dedicated to diversity and service, including the Multicultural Student Services Center, Student Academic Success, Disability Support Services and Tutoring, and the Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service.
Athletic Director Patrick Nero will continue to oversee the Department of Athletics and Recreation and now report directly to Dr. Lerman.
As part of the restructuring, GW will launch a new Division of Enrollment Management that will include the undergraduate admissions and financial aid offices in SASS and graduate admissions, graduate financial aid and graduate support services that now report to Senior Vice Provost Forrest Maltzman. The division will begin operations in July, and the university will commence a national search for a division leader, who will report to Dr. Maltzman. In addition, Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs C. Dianne Martin will work with the Faculty in Residence and Faculty Guides program.
Dr. Lerman paid tribute to Dr. Chernak’s dedication to the university and myriad accomplishments throughout his 24 years at GW.
“I want to express my sincere appreciation to Bob for his significant contributions to GW over the years and for his outstanding leadership,” said Dr. Lerman. “He has played a key role in helping shape the university into what it is today. Bob’s experience and expertise have been invaluable in guiding the decision-making process to create a new structure that will support our strategic direction.”
