The George Washington University is developing a more integrated and holistic structure to provide academic services to undergraduate students, the university announced Thursday.
GW will realign existing academic support services through a single coordinated structure within GW Libraries & Academic Innovation (GWLAI).
“The new structure will better enable the university to provide academic services that enrich and enhance the learning experience of undergraduate students,” said Geneva Henry, dean of libraries and academic innovation.
Specifically, GWLAI will coordinate with academic partners, such as the Writing Center, Disability Support Services and the Center for Student Engagement, to offer a single access point for student academic support services, including:
- Expanded individual and group tutoring
- Time management and study skills workshops and curricula
- Peer coaching
- Individualized learning consultations
- Coordination of support for student writing through the Writing Center
- Quantitative tutoring and support through STEMworks
A new website is being created to provide students with a “one-stop” shop for accessing these support services, including peer tutoring in STEMworks and within academic departments, as well as assistance with writing, research and study skills. It also will provide a searchable database of study spaces across campus.
The new structure will further enable GWLAI to work collaboratively with Enrollment and the Student Experience, academic deans’ offices and other university offices to ensure that students receive the necessary support to achieve their academic potential, said Ms. Henry.
“We are excited to partner with the Office of the Provost to enhance and expand academic support services, something we have been advocating for as part of our administration’s spring priorities,” said Student Association President Peak Sen Chua. “The expanded services and the new structure will enable students to access needed support and guidance, fulfill their academic potential and set students up for success.”
