Progress on the Law Learning Center Garage project, located in the 2000 block of G Street, took another step forward with last week’s installation of a tower crane to assist with the remaining phases of construction.
“This project continues at a steady pace, with excavation nearly complete and below-grade concrete work underway,” said Senior Associate Vice President for Operations Alicia Knight. “The erection of the tower crane marks an important step in the project, allowing the building’s structural work to commence.”
The Law Learning Center Garage is designed to house one level of program space for GW's Law School and four levels of underground parking, containing approximately 392 parking spaces. The project provides underground parking to replace some of the parking spaces lost in demolition of the University Parking Garage (for construction of the Science and Engineering Hall) and related decentralization of parking—both important components of the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan. Construction on the project began last fall, and the parking is scheduled for completion by late 2012. The Law School program space is scheduled to open for the summer 2013 semester.
“This project achieves two important campus plan goals. First, maintaining a minimum number of on-campus parking spaces, as required in our campus plan, and second, continuing to provide quality space in support of our academic mission,” Ms. Knight said.
The street-level plan for the project contains entrances to below-ground space as well as approximately 58 additional temporary surface parking spaces, university loading and service areas, and landscaping that provides an attractive and sustainable improvement to the campus, reducing storm water runoff through the use of sustainable streetscape design.
The Law Learning Center Garage project is one of four developments currently underway on the 16 development sites approved in the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan. Other current projects include the Science and Engineering Hall, the GW Museum and the School of Public Health and Health Services. Additionally, planning work is underway to develop site 75A, located in the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.
Ms. Knight said the Law Learning Center Garage project has involved most areas within the Division of Operations. “From the campus planning, development and construction needed to build the structure to the sustainable features of the site, to planning for the management of the new parking spaces and upkeep of the facility, this job exemplifies our division mission to build, maintain and “green” the university,” she said.
