The university last week kicked off a month of events—#CelebrateGW—that celebrate the 285th anniversary of George Washington’s birthday and the 196th anniversary of the university's founding, recognizing the legacy of George Washington's leadership. Last week included Charter Day, where university community members celebrated the university's founding with charters and cupcakes, and the annual Birthday Bonfire, which brought students, faculty and staff to University Yard for a huge bonfire, s'mores and music. Rounding out the weekend, the university hosted the GW Slam Dunk Homecoming Tailgate with free food, beverages and tailgate games before participants cheered on the men's and women's basketball teams. Both teams won.
And the events aren't over yet. On the afternoon of Feb. 22, GW community members are invited on a trek to George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate in Alexandria, Va., to tour George Washington's home for free. GW will also host the sixth annual George Washington lecture that evening; Walter Russell Mead, a Bard College professor, will discuss George Washington's legacy around religious freedom and tolerance.
