Residence halls will be updated and renovated every seven years, the university has announced. Renovations will begin this summer with International House, the Dakota and City Hall.
The type and scope of renovations will depend on the building, taking into account feedback from campus residents, current building conditions, necessary system upgrades and availability of funding. Renovations may include kitchens, bathrooms, carpeting and lighting upgrades.
“We believe this strategy for building upgrades will assist us in further enhancing the overall residential experience for our students,” said Alicia Knight, senior associate vice president for operations.
Buildings initially identified for renovation in upcoming summers include Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy-Onassis Hall, Mitchell Hall, Francis Scott Key Hall, Strong Hall, Guthridge Hall, 2109 F Street and Ivory Tower. The university will continue to address preventative maintenance and repair issues as appropriate in all residence halls.
The seven-year renovation schedule was developed with input from student leaders.
“I'm pleased the university responded to students' concerns regarding the quality of on-campus housing and is working to improve housing across campus,” said Student Association President Julia Susuni. “In order for our community to support students inside the classroom, it's important for us to support students outside the classroom.”
Seth Weinshel, director of housing, said the renovation plan demonstrates the university’s commitment to ensuring students have modern residence halls that help support their academic experience.
“The renovation plan is a proactive strategy to routinely update campus housing and provide greater value to all students,” he said.
