“Moving America Forward” town hall will be streamed live from the Marvin Center.
President Barack Obama will hold a “Moving America Forward” town hall Tuesday at 7 p.m. at GW’s Marvin Center. President Obama will take questions from the GW community and people watching a webcast broadcast live from the event.
The town hall will be the third in a series of “Moving America Forward” events President Obama is holding prior to the election and is sponsored by Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee.
Twenty GW students and faculty members will participate in the town hall. The students, all first-time voters in this year’s midterm elections, will be drawn from the Guide to Personal Success (GPS) program. Participating GW professors will be selected by the Department of Political Science in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. They will join about 100 other attendees coordinated by Organizing for America.
“This is an exceptional opportunity for George Washington students and faculty to engage directly with the president of the United States on the issues facing our country,” says President Steven Knapp.
The Marvin Center Grand Ballroom is being transformed by the Democratic National Committee into a studio for the town hall, which will be webcast nationwide and covered by a pool of national media outlets. Participants will be seated in the round, with the president talking questions from a small stage in the center. The town hall will be broadcast on GWTV to enable the entire campus to watch the event. The GW homepage, www.gwu.edu, will link to the webcast.
Marvin Center access will be limited on Tuesday between 3 and 9 p.m. to accommodate security required for the president’s visit. The Marvin Center will close at 3 p.m., with the exception of J Street, which will close at 4:30 p.m. The Marvin Center will reopen at 9 p.m. The Marvin Center parking garage will be closed all day on Tuesday and will reopen Wednesday with normal operating hours.
Two events originally scheduled to be held in the Marvin Center have changed locations:
Cuban Movie Night: The Lost City, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Marvin Center Amphitheater, will be held at the same time in the Jack Morton Auditorium.
The Communications Expo, scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom, will be rescheduled.
In addition, the Department of Theatre and Dance is rescheduling a dress rehearsal for Oleanna, and a bowling class slated for the Hippodrome will be rescheduled. Students who participate in these activities should contact their departments for updated information.
