The Final Lap, Dec. 1st-12th 2025

At the George Washington University, the holiday season is synonymous with the end of the semester, which means final exams and projects are just around the corner. The Division for Student Affairs has compiled a list of resources for students to utilize during this time, which includes academic and counseling services, free fitness classes and more ways to support well-being through finals.

Counseling services

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers counseling consultations, appointments, workshops and group counseling. Students can schedule a CAPS consultation on the Student Health Portal. Students in crisis or concerned about another student in crisis can call 202-994-5300 (option 3) 24-hours a day, seven days a week to speak with a counselor.

GW also partners with TimelyCare, a leading virtual telehealth provider, to help students access free medical and counseling services anytime—during the day, at night or on the weekend. Download the TimelyCare mobile app to your Android or Apple phone or visit via GW’s TimelyCare portal on your desktop. Whether you’re feeling under the weather, anxious or overwhelmed, you can talk to a licensed provider to get the care you need via phone or secure video visits at no cost.

Final Lap

Open to all GW students, the Final Lap is designed to support student well-being prior to and during final exams. This year’s Final Lap runs through Friday, Dec. 12. Highlights include:

Midnight Breakfast

Monday, Dec. 8 from 9:30 p.m.-midnight

Midnight Breakfast is an annual GW tradition that invites students to take a break from preparing for final exams, reconnect with friends, enjoy some food and participate in a variety of engaging activities.

This year’s theme is Wreck the Stress, and the event will feature boxing and plate breaking, karaoke, arcade games and more. Also included at Midnight Breakfast will be  Build-a-Study-Buddy with GW Program Board on the fourth floor of the University Student Center.

Stop by District House for your favorite breakfast foods to cure your late-night cravings and fuel your next study session. Then head over to the University Student Center for games and activities.

Academic resources

Students can utilize the following to help with end of the semester to-do lists such as writing papers, catching up on unread assignments, finishing final projects and studying for exams:

  • Academic Commons. This centralized navigation system offers tutoring and course reviews for undergraduate students throughout the final exam period, including help finding available study spaces.
  • Office for Student Success. This office oversees the implementation of academic processes and policies, special programs and support services to ensure students have the resources they need to thrive at GW and during the final exam period.
  • Students feeling overwhelmed by deadlines can view two-to-three-minute videos made by GW students with tips for time management.
  • Writing Center. A division of the University Writing Program, this center offers free, peer-based support to students finishing up final papers. Clients participate in one-on-one sessions with student consultants on their projects at all stages of the writing process.
  • All library services, including the Ask Us Desk, assistance locating resources and contactless book pick up or delivery, are available for students.
  • Extended library and study space hours are available in Gelman and Eckles libraries.

Disability Support Services (DSS). Students who need to request accommodations can visit DSS, which works collaboratively with the GW community to foster a climate of universal academic excellence while promoting disability culture.
