Interim Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Named

The Office of the Provost has named Emily Hammond, the Glen Earl Weston Research Professor of Law, interim vice provost for faculty affairs, effective Sept. 1. They previously held the role from 2022-23.

A nationally-recognized expert in energy law, environmental law and administrative law, they most recently served as the inaugural faculty director of academic sustainability programs for the GW Alliance for a Sustainable Future, which reports to the Office of the Provost. In this role, they continued to advance the university’s sustainability curricula and established two multidisciplinary, cross-university committees to support faculty governance and curricular development within the sustainability minor.

“Professor Hammond has an impressive track record of inspiring academic affairs leadership and has been a tremendous asset in their decade at GW,” Interim Provost John Lach said. “We are fortunate— and I am grateful—that they will serve in the vice provost role once again during this transitional period, bringing deep experience and familiarity to this critical position, as well as a strong commitment to supporting our world class faculty.”

As vice provost for faculty affairs, Hammond oversaw the advancement of critical functions and initiatives dedicated to the continued success of all GW faculty, including full- and part-time faculty personnel offices, the Technology Commercialization Office, the Society of the Emeriti, the GW Academic Leadership Academy (GWALA) and the annual Faculty Honors Ceremony. They will continue to lead these functions as interim vice provost.

“It is an honor to contribute to our university community by returning to this role,” Hammond said. “I have deep faith in the dedication of our faculty to their teaching, research and service efforts, and in the special importance of universities in generating knowledge and advancing civil society. I look forward to supporting both faculty and our university leadership team in the coming academic year.”

During the 2021-22 academic year, Hammond held a presidential appointment at the Department of Energy, where they served as deputy general counsel for Litigation, Regulation and Enforcement as well as for Environment and Litigation.

Hammond joined GW Law in 2014 and previously served as senior associate dean for academic affairs. Prior to joining GW Law, Hammond was a faculty member at Wake Forest University and the University of Oklahoma College of Law, where they held roles as associate dean for academic affairs and associate director of the Law Center.
