Sarah Shomstein, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at the George Washington University Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, has been named a recipient of the 2025 Psychonomic Society Mid-Career Award. The award honors individuals in the middle of their careers who have made excellent scientific contributions to experimental and cognitive psychology and related fields.
Shomstein’s research focuses on the mechanisms of attentional selection, specifically how the human brain determines which aspects of the perceptual environment are represented more efficiently and influence behavior. She joined GW in 2007 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University.
Shomstein is also the editor-in-chief of “Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics,” a journal that encompasses all areas of research in sensory processes, perception, attention and psychophysics.
