Xiaofei Kang's book, “Ghosts, Shamans, and Gender Politics in Chinese Communist Propaganda, 1942-1953.”

Xiaofei Kang, an associate professor of religion at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at George Washington University, received an award for her book, “Ghosts, Shamans, and Gender Politics in Chinese Communist Propaganda, 1942-1953.” The book highlights how the Communist Party in China used religion as a model for its aims and offers insights into the transformative power of propaganda in global politics.

Kang’s book is the winner of this year's Joseph Levenson Book Prize from the Association of Asian Studies (AAS), a non-profit dedicated to the advancement of the field of Asian Studies through international exchange, networking, publications, research support and career development. Every year the AAS awards a book prize to recognize authors for their outstanding scholarship and contributions to the fields.
