New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, J.D.’12, has been elected president of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG). Formella was sworn into office as New Hampshire Attorney General on April 22, 2021.

Previously, he served as Governor Chris Sununu’s legal counsel, advising the governor on all legal issues and litigation affecting New Hampshire, including significant healthcare settlements, the statewide response to the opioid crisis, criminal justice reform initiatives and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Each year, the NAAG president identifies an issue for the association and its members to focus on and prioritize. Formella announced his presidential initiative, “Building on the Opioid Litigation Success: AGs Leading the Fight Against Substance Abuse and Drug Trafficking.” The initiative aims to leverage the success of existing efforts to address the ongoing threats posed by fentanyl, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs. Before his work in public service, Formella began his legal career in private practice at Pierce Atwood LLP, one of the largest law firms in New England, where he was a member of the Business and Environmental Law practice groups.
