Lynn R. Goldman, the dean of the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, began a three-year term this month as a member of the governing council of the Institute of Medicine, the independent nonprofit that works to provide advice on health issues to the government and public.
In her role, Dr. Goldman will serve with 20 other health and medicine leaders who green-light IOM studies and monitor its policies, budget and investments. Dr. Goldman has been a member of the IOM, considered one of the highest honors in health and medicine, since 2007.
“I am honored to have been elected to serve on the governing council of the IOM,” Dr. Goldman said. “As a member of the council, I look forward to participating in IOM studies aimed at finding solutions for some of the nation’s most difficult health challenges.”
The dean has also served on numerous boards and expert committees, including the Committee on Environmental Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Lead Poisoning Prevention Advisory Committee and a number of expert panels for the National Research Council.
Dr. Goldman’s appointment comes after Paula M. Lantz, professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy, and Sara Rosenbaum, Harold and Jane Hirsh Professor of Health Law and Policy, were elected to the institute last October. That marked the first time two George Washington faculty members were elected simultaneously.
Ms. Rosenbaum lauded the dean on her achievement.
“The IOM provides authoritative advice on pressing health problems to members of Congress, policymakers and the general public,” Ms. Rosenbaum said. “I congratulate the dean on being elected by her peers to help guide the IOM’s programs and activities over the next three years.”
