The George Washington University was recently named a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program top producer, which considered the 2020-2021 academic year. The Gilman scholarship broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting Pell Grant recipients who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints.
GW’s achievement is a testament to its commitment to ensuring that next generation of leaders—including students of all backgrounds—engages internationally to foster mutual understanding and develop critical skills in support of national security and economic prosperity.
Last year, U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recognized GW as the No. 1 producer of Gilman recipients over the past 20 years in the medium institution category (5,000 to 15,000 undergrads). The Office for Study Abroad produced 15 recipients for the March 2021 cycle and more than 200 total awardees since the program’s inception in 2001.
“These recognitions reflect the university’s mission of creating global citizens and its commitment to improving access to study abroad so all GW students can have the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures and educational experiences,” said Assistant Provost of International Education Jennifer Donaghue.
Since 2001, the Gilman program has enabled more than 36,000 American students to study or intern abroad in 160 countries.
