The George Washington University’s commitment to veteran education has been again recognized in “G.I. Jobs” magazine. The university appears on the publication’s 2012 list of “Military Friendly Schools,” which honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are “doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.”
“GW is proud to be named a military friendly institution for a fourth year in a row,” said Andrew Sonn, assistant vice president for student affairs. “Over these last four years, the GW community has come together to support service members’ academic and career aspirations."
In partnership with the Yellow Ribbon Program, George Washington tuition has been covered fully for undergraduate student veterans since 2009. Thanks to increases in government assistance, almost all graduate student veterans are also now able to earn a degree tuition-free. In the 2011-12 year, more than 900 student veterans were enrolled at GW, including over 400 who applied to the Yellow Ribbon Program. About 70 percent of those students were enrolled in graduate programs.
George Washington has a Veteran Services office and a full-time coordinator position for veteran services and benefits. More than 900 student veterans, active duty military service members and their dependents are assisted by the office in their use of military benefits.
