Jon Stewart, executive producer and host of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and Chelsea Clinton will speak at the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) annual meeting to be held at George Washington March 30-April 1.
They will join a number of other high-profile speakers, including Bekele Geleta, secretary general of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Cynthia Koenig, chief executive officer of Wello.
The deadline for applications is Jan. 23.
“I am proud to hold this year’s CGI U in the nation’s capital, an ideal place to foster civic engagement among today’s young leaders and generate student commitments to better our world,” said President Bill Clinton, who will also speak at the meeting. “In the last five years, CGI U has convened more than 3,500 students from 641 schools in 110 countries and all 50 states. These students represent the hope I have for our next generation, and I am excited to see the innovative solutions that they will bring to CGI U in 2012.”
CGI U’s mission is to implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges by bringing together a community of global leaders. About 1,200 students attending CGI U will create their own “Commitment to Action” – a concrete plan to address an issue within CGI U’s focus areas: education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation and public health.
Founded by President Clinton in 2007, CGI U provides a forum to engage both domestic and international students on the challenges facing the world today. The program builds upon President Clinton’s belief that young people have more power today to change the world than ever before.
George Washington was selected as the host of CGI U 2012 last fall. The meeting in Washington, D.C. marks the first time that the CGI U meeting will be held in the Northeast region.
