The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW Hospital announced Sunday that they are working together to minimize the risk of COVID-19 spread to patients and caregivers in the wake of the discovery that some providers have tested positive for the virus.
With the COVID-19 pandemic evolving rapidly, the medical enterprise’s priority remains the health and safety of patients and caregivers, from providers to staff. Because health care workers are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, GW’s medical facilities have been prepared for the development of positive cases.
The providers affected are currently in self-isolation and are doing well.
“In each case, we have followed the appropriate protocols of testing, self-isolation and have contacted those who may have been exposed to them including patients and staff," said Barbara L. Bass, vice president for health affairs, dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and CEO of the Medical Faculty Associates. "We will be launching telehealth options for patients and rescheduling elective procedures and visits to make sure that we can keep our GW community, our patients and all the people in our great capital region healthy and safe."
The GW community is encouraged to continue to reference reliable sources for updates about COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides guidance on travel and the virus’s spread. The GW COVID-19 website is also being updated regularly to include evolving guidance for the university community.
