A new identity and access management project from GW’s Division of Information Technology will enhance IT security and offer improved NetID services to the GW community.
“The identity and access management project is an exciting initiative that will offer improved services, support and security for the GW community,” said Chief Information Officer David Steinour. “This is a multifaceted, multiyear effort that lays the groundwork for future enhancements.”
The first phase of this project allows for simplified account creation and deactivation, password synchronization across IT applications and improved self-service user account management services such as a reset process for forgotten passwords. Eventually, users will be able to have a single sign-on across multiple myGW applications.
Over the next several months, all members of the GW community with active NetIDs will need to “claim” their NetID accounts in order to change their passwords, create security questions and access these new services.
The identity and access management project will undergo a phased rollout, and users will be notified within the timeframe listed below via email when it is time to “claim” one’s account:
- Students (October through December)
- Staff (December through January)
- Faculty (February through March)
Mr. Steinour said it is important for GW community members to keep security in mind while online. When creating security questions, he said to avoid answering with easy-to-find personal information to prevent data compromise; keep devices updated with the latest software and systems; and beware of any suspicious emails, friend requests or website links. When a website or application asks for sensitive information such as a social security number, Mr. Steinour said to question whether it is necessary.
Mr. Steinour also reminds users to avoid leaving devices unattended and to make sure all devices are password protected.
