Dr. Knapp acknowledges staff and faculty efforts in battling Winter Storm Jonas.
I write to thank the many people who worked tirelessly over the past week to keep the university operating and its community safe.
As severe weather caused the cancelation of classes, events and personal plans, more than 250 employees worked on site for the duration of this unusually severe storm. They kept the university functioning for the thousands of students who live on our campuses.
Members of GW’s operations team braved blizzard conditions to clear roads, sidewalks and entryways. Thanks to them and staff in many other units across the university, we were able to keep the Marvin Center, the Lerner Health and Wellness Center, J Street and Pelham Commons open throughout the storm and quickly reopen our libraries. GW police officers also took on extended shifts to make sure our students and staff remained safe during this extreme event. Many more staff as well as faculty members worked to maintain the continuity of the university’s operations.
As the university and the city continue to dig out from a storm for the record books, we still have several days of recovery ahead of us. But as we return to normal, I encourage you to thank the dedicated members of our GW community who served the university so well during a very challenging time.
