Dear Members of the George Washington University Community,

I write with deep sadness to report the tragic loss of another member of our student body.  Ben Asma was a first-year honors student studying biomedical engineering in our School of Engineering and Applied Science.  He lived in West Hall on our Mount Vernon Campus.  There is no indication that his death was caused by a criminal act.

On behalf of the George Washington community, I extend my deepest condolences to the Asma family and Ben’s many friends.

Our main concern at this difficult time is to provide support to those most closely affected by this devastating loss.  The staffs of the University Counseling Center, Division of Student Affairs, and West Hall are reaching out directly to these students to offer assistance.

Once again, I urge all members of our community to take care of ourselves and of one another.  If you feel that you or someone you know needs help coping with this tragedy, please know that help is available on both the Foggy Bottom and the Mount Vernon Campuses through the University Counseling Center (UCC), which is now offering expanded counseling hours at West Hall.  Please contact the Center at 202-994-5300 or via its website for more information.  In addition, if you are concerned about a member of the GW community please fill out a CARE form.  Our office of Parent Services can be reached at 202-994-2305 or via [email protected].
