Sue Campbell, a longtime George Washington University employee who served as senior secretary and coordinator for the Faculty Senate, died Wednesday. She was 66.

Ms. Campbell served in various administrative positions in the Division of Student Affairs and Division of Academic Affairs during her four-decade tenure at GW, including more than 20 years administering the daily activities of the Faculty Senate office. During her time at GW, she also completed a certificate program at the law school.

“Sue was an indispensable person who was totally committed to her work in the Faculty Senate,” Charles Garris, chair of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, said in a statement. “On the evening that she passed, she told me that she was eager to return to work on senate matters. She was at the forefront of every important issue that the university has faced in recent memory.”

Ms. Campbell earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon in 1969. She came to GW in 1974 and spent the next 14 years as senior secretary/executive secretary in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Ms. Campbell later worked as the coordinator of student judicial affairs and director of judicial affairs. In August 1994, she began a 21-year stint with the Faculty Senate, where she conducted daily office operations and worked with the executive committee and chairs of standing committees in preparing senate meetings, agendas and reports.

She was known for her diligence, work ethic and her deep understanding of university history, Dr. Garris said.

“Her wisdom, her capacity for hard work, her concern for the details of process, committee structure and formation and her deep roots in the university community make her irreplaceable,” he said. “The Faculty Senate deeply appreciates her many contributions over the years and will sorely miss her, and we will remember her."
