Senior Guard James Bishop IV will return to the GW men's team for 2023-2024 season.

George Washington University’s men's basketball senior guard James Bishop IV announced his intention to return for his final season in the Buff & Blue in 2023-24 on Monday.

"Obviously we're thrilled to have James back," head coach Chris Caputo said. "He really embodies everything we want a GW student-athlete to be. Having somebody like James Bishop in the building every day is instrumental in developing the culture we want here. His work ethic, his demeanor and his unselfishness are what we want to reward here."

Bishop returns to Foggy Bottom after completing one of the greatest individual seasons in GW history in 2022-23. The Baltimore native became the first member of the Buff & Blue to lead the A-10 in scoring since 2000 as he finished 12th nationally with 21.6 points per game. He also earned First Team All-Conference honors, the first for GW since 2006.

"I'm excited to return to GW and earn my degree at a place that means a lot to me," Bishop said. "I have a lot of trust in our coaching staff and the plan they have for me to finish my college career. I also love the culture that we're building. We have a lot of good momentum from this year that we can build off of to have a better season next year."

In addition to his scoring prowess, Bishop was 34th in the country with 5.2 assists per game, becoming the first A-10 student-athlete to average 21.0 ppg and 5.0 apg since 2003. His 691 points last season were the third-most in program history and his 21.6 ppg ranked eighth all-time.

Despite playing only three years at GW, including a shortened season in 2020-21, Bishop has already etched his name across the Buff & Blue record book. He will enter his last year 12th all-time with 1,518 points at GW, 731 points shy of the all-time record. He also is GW's all-time leader in minutes per game (36) and ranks among the program's best in points per game (6th, 19.2), 3-pointers made (t-10th, 149), assists per game (11th, 3.9), assists (13th, 313) and field goals made (20th, 523).
