A Spotify playlist with a Mother’s Day theme in time for May 8.
With Mother’s Day less than a week away, we’re thinking about ways to show our moms we care. What better way to (literally) sing her praises and think about our favorite memories than with a Mom-themed playlist? George Washington Today collected some music and memories from people across the university to create this list of tunes you can play next Sunday.

“A Song For Mama,” Boyz II Men
“This song still brings tears to my eyes. I chose this song because it makes me think of my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. These women were very instrumental in raising me, and I am fortunate enough to still have all of them in my life. I think of the quote, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ My mother, grandmother and great grandmother were my ‘village.’"
-Executive Assistant for Parent Services Leah Small

“Mother’s Only Sleeping,” Bill Monroe and His Bluegrass Boys
“Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys first recorded 'Mother's Only Sleeping' in 1946. It’s a true heart song with some of the finest bluegrass harmony ever recorded!”
-Professor of Music Kip Lornell

“The Man I Love,” George Gershwin
“My mother was a wonderful jazz pianist. She was too shy to play outside the circle of family and friends, but growing up I spent most nights, after the dinner dishes were done, singing to her expert accompaniment. She had a special love for the songs of George Gershwin, and I'd have to put his ‘The Man I Love’ on my Mother's Day playlist, just for her.”
-Professor of Theatre Leslie Jacobson

“Gimme Three Steps,” Lynyrd Skynyrd
“This song used to play all the time in the car when I was younger, and my mom loved to sing along.  Every time I hear this song it takes me back to those moments in the car, singing with my mom. It's a simple memory, but one I'll never forget."
-Senior Ben Sanders

“Sincere,” Meredith Wilson and “The Schuyler Sisters,” Hamilton cast
“My mom has always been a fan of the great canon of show tunes, and we listened to them incessantly when I was a kid. The songs from the Music Man were always on loop. She always loved the Barbershop harmonies in "Sincere.” As I got older and music became my life as an adolescent, she loved when I would sing everything we listened to. She would ask me to sing out louder so she could hear me.

Now, it's about listening to her granddaughter Molly (my 11 year old) belt out show tunes. Currently my mom's favorite is “The Schuyler Sisters” from “Hamilton” because it's Molly's favorite to sing loudly.”
- Executive Director of Lisner Auditorium and Partnership Development Maryann Lombardi

“The Way We Were,” Barbara Streisand
“My mom always loved Robert Redford so the ‘The Way We Were’ was her favorite movie and song while I was growing up. She was also a big Barbra Streisand fan so any time I hear her, I think of my mom.”
- Senior Associate Dean of Students Mark Levine

“Oh! What a Beautiful Morning,” Oklahoma cast
“This song immediately came to mind! My mom used to wake me up by singing this before school. It might not be the most Mother's Day-themed song, but I definitely think of my mom whenever I hear it.”
-Senior Eleanor Davis
