George Washington University today announced it will officially release its new visual identity with a celebration on University Yard on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m.

Members of the university community are invited to attend the event, which will feature free food, music and giveaways as the new GW logo is revealed. A screening of The Avengers, sponsored by Program Board, will follow.

Also as part of the launch, the university will start a campaign to capture the history-making stories of GW community members. Students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to share their GW story—big or small, local or international—in a mobile studio that will roll into University Yard on Aug. 26. The studio will also park at various to-be-announced locations on campus Aug. 27-30. Community members’ stories will be featured on go.gwu.edu/makinghistory beginning Aug. 27. GW community members can also share their stories on the site starting Aug. 27 through YouTube and Flickr.

The Aug. 26 launch is the culmination of two years of research, university collaboration and design to create a new visual identity. A university-wide committee launched the effort in 2010, and, in 2011, GW hired two consulting firms, FutureBrand and 160over90, to design and implement the identity.

“We are extremely excited to share GW’s new visual identity with the university community,” said Lorraine Voles, vice president for external relations. “This effort has been two years in the making, and required the work of so many members of the university community and outside experts. We look forward to revealing a logo that reflects the university’s richly diverse campuses, schools and programs.”
