The George Washington University community will celebrate Flag Day Tuesday, an annual event recognizing alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends who give back to the university.
The Division of Development and Alumni Relations will have stations set up throughout the Foggy Bottom Campus. Students, faculty and staff are invited to come to Kogan Plaza between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to sign cards thanking alumni donors.
A number of philanthropic challenges will take place around Flag Day this year. Elliott School of International Affairs alumnus Michael Hope, B.A. ’79, will make a $100,000 gift to the Power & Promise fund for student aid if 12,000 alumni make gifts to GW ahead of Flag Day. If 500 students make a gift, a group of GW parents will make a $12,000 donation to student life.
As it has done in previous years, the university will hand out blue-and-white Commander-in-Chief flag buttons Tuesday. Said to be personally designed by George Washington, the Commander-in-Chief flag is an adopted symbol of Making History: The Campaign for GW. The flag represents a common goal of generating philanthropic support and perpetuates Washington's vision of a university in the nation’s capital that would serve as America’s intellectual hub.
