GW will mark the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with events on and off campus, including a candlelight vigil and the university’s annual Freshman Day of Service.
Sept. 8: HSPI Forum with Fox News’ Catherine Herridge
GW’s Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) will host a Policy & Research Forum featuring Fox News National Correspondent Catherine Herridge in 1957 E Street’s State Room from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Ms. Herridge will discuss her book “The Next Wave: On the Hunt for Al Qaeda's American Recruits,” which examines the homegrown terrorist threat within the U.S. The event will be moderated by HSPI Director Frank J. Cilluffo. Free and open to the public.
Sept. 9: Kalb Report
The Kalb Report will open its season with the network anchors who covered Sept. 11. Former network hosts Charles Gibson (ABC Good Morning America), Dan Rather (CBS Evening News), Brit Hume (FOX News Special Report) and former CNN bureau chief Frank Sesno will join moderator Marvin Kalb at the National Press Club at 8 p.m. to talk about that day and the subsequent decade that changed the world.
Sept. 11: Moment of Silence and Candlelight Vigil
At 8:46 a.m., members of the GW community are asked to observe a minute of silence to remember the victims and the heroes of Sept. 11. The carillon bells on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses will toll for the duration of the moment of silence.
A candlelight vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the University Yard to honor the anniversary and the nine GW alumni who lost their lives on Sept. 11. The observance is open to the entire GW community and all friends of the university. In the event of rain, the vigil will be held in Columbian Square on the first floor of GW’s Marvin Center. Sept. 11: Freshman Day of Service and Convocation
The class of 2015 will work together at sites throughout the area to enhance the learning environment for thousands of D.C. public school students, clean local parks and rivers and serve the region’s veterans. The service project kicks off GW's participation in President Obama's Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge and begins at noon in the Charles E Smith Center. Participants will serve and then join university-wide candlelight vigil. For more information, visit http://serve.gwu.edu.
