George Washington University President Steven Knapp accepted on behalf of the university the Educator of the Year Award from the World Affairs Council – Washington, D.C., on March 10.
In remarks, Dr. Knapp outlined GW’s commitment to global education and international affairs at the council’s 30th anniversary Global Education Gala held at the Ritz Carlton in Washington, D.C.
“The George Washington University and the World Affairs Council – Washington, D.C. share a deep commitment to global education,” said Dr. Knapp. “On behalf of our entire university, I am honored to accept the Educator of the Year Award from an institution that does so much to promote global awareness among the youth, the teachers and the wide public in Washington, D.C., and across the capital region.”
The World Affairs Council – Washington, D.C. praised George Washington for “setting the standard for universities with regard to training students to become citizens of the world.” Officials noted that “nearly every facet of the program and curricula at GW is infused with the exploration of international issues that instills a global consciousness in the student body.”
The World Affairs Council event highlighted its regional, national and global outreach programs involving students, teachers, community leaders, American citizens and international community representatives.
Other honorees included Arne Duncan, U.S. secretary of education; Pierre Vimont, ambassador of the Republic of France to the United States; Vinton G. Cerf, Google Inc.’s vice president and chief Internet evangelist; and Judy Woodruff, senior correspondent of PBS’s “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” who also emceed the event.
