While George Washington University graduates were celebrating for their own commencement ceremonies last month, several GW leaders were sharing messages of a hopeful future with students at other institutions.

Ambassador Reuben E. Brigety II, dean of the Elliott School of International Affairs, gave a commencement address to graduates of the College of Arts and Letters at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., on May 4. Dr. Brigety spoke about the value of education and the importance of having courage. He also received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the institution.

Fitzhugh Mullan, professor of health policy and management and of pediatrics at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, delivered the commencement address at the Yale School of Medicine on May 21. He stressed the importance of social mission in a medical education and urged deans to create opportunities for local students.

Kevin O’Connor, associate professor of medicine and director of executive medicine at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, gave the commencement address at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York on May 29. He encouraged graduates to genuinely connect with their patients and help carry their suffering.

Jeffrey Rosen, GW Law professor, delivered a commencement address to nearly 700 master’s and doctoral students at Widener University in Chester, Pa., on May 19. He encouraged students to devote themselves to a lifetime of self-education for both professional success and to be good citizens. He was awarded an honorary doctor of law degree.

Lisa M. Schenck, associate dean at GW Law, was awarded an honorary doctor of law degree from Providence College in Rhode Island, her alma mater, on May 20, in recognition of her distinguished career as a military jurist, legal scholar and educator.
