GW Employees to be Recognized for Exceptional Service

October 27, 2011

Sixteen George Washington University employees will receive awards next week for their dedication to the university as part of this year’s Service Excellence Celebration.

The 10th annual celebration honors staff who take pride in supporting the priorities and goals of George Washington.

Andy Sonn, executive director for administration in Student and Academic Support Services and co-chair of the Service Excellence Celebration Planning Committee, said the celebration is an important GW tradition that brings together faculty, students and staff.

“For 10 years, the Service Excellence Celebration has gathered individuals from across the GW community to share best practices; recognize individuals, initiatives and departments that are doing great work; and raise awareness of how the GW values are manifested in individual and collective achievements,” said Mr. Sonn.

As part of the celebration, service excellence conferences will be held on the Virginia Science and Technology Campus today and on the Foggy Bottom Campus on Nov. 1 and 2. The conferences will feature panels on diversity and inclusion, fundraising and university priorities as well as workshops on communications, professional etiquette, project management and conflict resolution.

“The Service Excellence conference leverages the rich reservoir of talent in the GW community,” said Mr. Sonn.

Presenters include Terri Harris Reed, vice provost for diversity and inclusion; Michael Morsberger, vice president for advancement; and members of the provost’s senior staff.

This year, the Service Excellence Celebration Planning Committee received more than 600 nominations for its nine awards: staff, alumni, faculty, parent, student and student staff choice awards as well as awards honoring a department, school or unit and a partnership or collaborative initiative. There is also an award given to an individual, department, organization or partnership dedicated to sustainability.

“The Service Excellence Celebration enables the GW community to take a few moments to reflect on what makes GW such a great institution,” said Mr. Sonn.

The Service Excellence Celebration will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 1 in the Marvin Center. The Service Excellence conference on the Foggy Bottom Campus will be held from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 1 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 2 in the Marvin Center. The Service Excellence conference on the Virginia Science and Technology Campus will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in Enterprise Hall.
