uture of Finance & Trade in Africa 2.0 Conference

The George Washington University School of Business will host a high-level conference designed to explore the transformative potential of technology in shaping Africa's economic future.

The conference, “The Future of Finance and Trade in Africa 2.0,” will bring together influential leaders from diverse sectors, including African government officials, CEOs and academics.

The event will be held on April 23 in the University Student Center. Industry leaders will discuss how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and digital finance can drive innovation, improve financial systems and foster economic development across the continent.

The inaugural conference was held in 2024. This year’s event builds on that success to further explore the challenges and opportunities facing the continent as it embraces digital transformation and strives for sustainable, inclusive growth. A key theme of the event will be exploring how digital transformation can modernize Africa’s economies, especially within finance and trade. Experts will examine the potential of digital finance to enhance access to monetary services and improve trade networks across the continent.

One of the featured sessions will include a conversation with Sébastien Ellepo, CEO of NGSER, who will reflect on the company’s journey from its founding in Côte d’Ivoire in 2007 to becoming a key player in Africa’s digital transformation landscape.

Another discussion will bring together distinguished representatives from African central banks and ministries of finance for a candid and forward-looking conversation on the continent’s economic future. These leaders will share insights on advancing financial inclusion and ensuring that innovation is aligned with social and environmental sustainability. Topics will include how regulatory frameworks can support emerging technologies and how financial institutions can play a proactive role in promoting an equitable future.

Throughout the day, sessions will highlight strategies for supporting business enterprises across the continent and serve as a platform for bold ideas and collaboration.

The closing keynote address will be delivered by Botswana Vice President and Finance Minister Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe.

“I will deliver a keynote address on The Future of Finance and Trade in Africa to the GW community, alongside distinguished business and policy leaders. This conversation could not come at a more fitting time. As the global order bends under the weight of uncertainty, there is an urgent need to rethink the architecture of economic systems, and to place Africa not on the margins, but at the center of what comes next," Gaolathe said.

Registration for the conference is open.
