George Washington University alumna Melissa Mogollon, B.A.’16, authored her debut novel, “Oye.” The book tells the story of Luciana, the youngest in her Colombian-American family. Despite usually being relegated to the sidelines, she now finds herself the voice of reason in the middle of their unexpected crisis while her older sister Mari is away at college and unable to help beyond phone calls.
When South Florida residents are ordered to evacuate before a hurricane, Luciana must manage her eccentric grandmother, Abue, who refuses to leave. Adding to the turmoil, Abue receives a devastating medical diagnosis. As Luciana becomes Abue’s caretaker, translator and confidante, their bond deepens. Luciana chronicles her experiences in a narrative that flows like an engaging, heartfelt conversation.
