The George Washington community will be able to buy a wide range of groceries on campus starting next year.

A new Whole Foods will be located at 2200 Pennsylvania Ave. in the Square 54 building. The grocery chain recently signed a lease with Boston Properties, the university’s development partner on the Square 54 project.

“We're pleased to have a new grocer coming to the George Washington community as a part of the Square 54 project,” says Louis Katz, GW executive vice president and treasurer.

“A grocery store was always an important element of the retail design of the project,” he says. “So many of our students and neighbors wanted to see a new grocery store in Foggy Bottom, and I'm sure they share in the excitement of seeing this plan come to fruition.”

The store will be approximately 37,000 square feet and is slated to open in the second half of 2011.

Whole Foods will be one of several retail outlets in the project, which will also include office and residential space.
