Get Your GWorld 2.0 Card

If you haven’t gotten your GWorld 2.0 card yet, it’s time.

Later this month the university will begin replacing the card readers that require cardholders to swipe their GWorld with new ones that work with just a tap.

Replacements will continue through early 2011. Only the GWorld 2.0 cards work with the new readers.

Ed Schonfeld, senior associate vice president for administration, answers frequently asked questions about the new cards, how to get them and where to go for more information.

What changes will we see once the new readers are installed?
The new tap readers and our new GWorld 2.0 cards have advanced technology that allows you to simply tap your card at the reader instead of swiping your card. The tap readers will be installed in residence halls, academic buildings, office buildings, libraries, the Lerner Health and Wellness Center and parking garages. Laundry facilities and vending machines will also have the new tap readers.

Why do we need to get our cards by Oct. 22?
The new readers will only work with the new GWorld 2.0 cards. GWorld is replacing all the current card readers on a rolling basis beginning this month and continuing through early 2011. New tap readers have already been installed at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus and will soon be installed at the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses.

Why is GW changing its current GWorld system?
The GWorld system is being upgraded. GWorld 2.0 adds enhanced technology security to the system, and the new cards have features that help protect the identities of the GW community.

Holograms make cards more difficult to duplicate, and expiration dates enable the university to easily discern whether the cardholder is a current member of the GW community. The new cards also feature color-coded bars that identify the holder as student, faculty or staff. New, larger photos will allow the GW Police Department to more easily identify cardholders

How can I get my new GWorld card?
Stop by the GWorld Card Office on the fifth floor of the Marvin Center. The process takes approximately five minutes, and you only need to present your current GWorld card and another government-issued ID such as a driver's license or passport.

What if I have questions?
