Beginning today, George Washington’s Office of Veteran Services will host a variety of events on campus to raise community awareness of veterans and veterans’ issues for its first annual Veterans Awareness Week.
“Our connection with the military community at GW makes Veterans Day a special day for us to celebrate and honor those who have served our country, which is why we are celebrating Veterans Day with a full week of events,” said Mary Waring, outreach coordinator for George Washington’s Office of Veteran Services.
The week will conclude with the annual Veterans Day Ceremony and barbecue in Kogan Plaza, featuring remarks by President Steven Knapp and GW Vets President Scott Disney.
The week’s events include:
- Thank A Vet Day in Marvin Center
- Movie screening of the HBO Documentary Film “Alive Day: Home from Iraq,” followed by a panel of GW student veterans
- Remarks by D-Day Veteran Roger Neighborgall and panel
- Veterans Writing Project Reading featuring veteran authors
- Veterans Day of Service with George Washington College Republicans and College Democrats
- Viewing of “Circumstances of Combat: Student Veteran Transition,” a GW-produced movie about George Washington veterans’ transition from the military to campus
- Remarks and Book Signing: Army Col. Charles W. Hoge, a nationally known expert on post-traumatic stress disorder, mild traumatic brain injury and other physiological reactions to war
- Annual Veterans Day Ceremony and barbecue
“Through these series of events, we hope to bring together the GW community to celebrate, bring awareness, and support all of our veterans on campus and in our community,” said Ms. Waring.
